Developing Our Rhino Models

I got tired of looking at screencaptures with bright colors, so I decided to create some quick line drawings from my recent rhino model. In this model, I used offset which created some strange shapes (less rounded and more angular). I started by creating a curve through the points at the edges of four rectangles (below).

These rectangles were determined according to the square footage required by the four main common spaces: the gym, the auditorium, the dining area and the administrative space. In this model, I also experimented some with control points which allowed me to manipulate the curves (which I'd like to work further). I also tried creating a few ramps to allow exterior access to the second level terrace at the northeast corner of the site.

Today, Danielle and I discussed several important factors we'd like to work on in our building design including:

Creating variation of terrace width: Using control points to manipulate curves allows us to be more specific about where a curve changes to accomodate program needs.

Circulation: Circulation could either be between the classrooms and the common space, or outside of the classrooms toward the center. Circulation could extend beyond the site boundaries above the alley to the north and west. Due to the location of the "L" circulation would only slightly extend over the sidewalk on the south and west sides of our building.

Center space between the terraces: This space could be interior but would require an atrium space to allow light to enter the building. If this space was considered exterior, it could be used as a playground, possibly including ways to access some of the terraces on the next level.

Solids and Voids: Courtyards (void) or common spaces such as dining areas could be placed at the top of the "cones"

  1. Great post. Good summary and I like the direction the model is going in. :)
