Plan: ground level
We decided to return to some of our original ideas of terracing. I also wanted to think more about how the program and form would influence eachother. Here the common spaces are shown in green, circulation is blue and classrooms are purple. Instead of four cones, we decided to try five so that we could separate the schools by grade, with two grades in each school.
I felt that the most difficult part of building this model, so far, has been deciding how to place the circulation. On the ground floor and 1st floor the circulation seems to work well. On upper floors though, if the hallways were on the terraces, they would block sunlight from reaching the classrooms unless the hallways were all atrium space. I experimented with stairways toward the boundaries of the site and hallways between the common areas and the classrooms to avoid this.

I was thinking about the division of grades again. Maybe we don't need 5 separate areas since the ones on the north are going to be taller, they can fit more classrooms, and therefore more grades. Maybe it's more important that the younger kids are all on the lower floors, and the older kids on the upper floors. For example, it might make more sense to have Pre-K through 1st grade on the ground floor so they are all within walking distance...rather than split them up vertically. Thoughts?
